What Are You Seeking?

             Matthew 6:19 – 34
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?  Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?  “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:25-34. Throughout the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, men came from all over to seek Him, unfortunately for them, they came for physical needs and gain but not to be saved (John 6:25-27). Many of us have become like them; we do not seek the Lord for the purpose of salvation, we seek Him because of what we want and what He will give us – increase, promotion, children, marriage, joy, peace, blessing, etc. There are many believers who have found themselves where they never planned or imagined, all because of pleasures of this world. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity! We have left and forsaken our first Love, the Maker, who can do all things and we are chasing after the wind.

We exert pressure over ourselves and subdue our body and soul to worldly oppression. All we think and talk about daily is how to make ends meet, how to be successful, or how to please the family. Money, work, business and career has taken over our life! But what do men seek?

1.  Power: no one wants to serve another, all want to be masters. Everyone wants to be a figure of authority in one way or another. Even wives are in fierce competition with their husbands and do not desire to be submissive. People go to great lengths, even join the occult, in order to obtain power to dominate and rule over others. They have forgotten, ‘all power in heaven, on earth and under the earth, belongs to God.’

2.  Position: with position, promotion and elevation comes honour and fame and therefore, many desire this. Men are insatiable beings; we always have the need to want or desire more than what we have or where we are. We feel like we have not reached the peak of our lives. Initially, people used to say, “Sky is the limit”; nowadays, the saying is “Sky is the beginning!” No one desires to remain in their position, but seeks for a higher level.

3.   Prosperity: money, money, money!!! It is all about the money in the world today. 1 Tim 6:9,10 says, ‘ But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.  For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.’ Men have even sold and exchanged their souls to the devil for riches, whereas, it is only God that gives power to get wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18).
